The long weekend of April 25 is, in a sense, the official date of the beginning of the beautiful season at the Aeolian Islands and of the events dedicated to spring. The Aeolian Islands, thanks to their position, are one of the most popular destinations in Europe between beautiful beaches, archeology and gastronomy.
Knowing the Aeolian Islands means traveling in time.
The Acropolis of Lipari (Aeolian) called The Castle
The castle, the fortress, stronghold of the Aeolian archipelago, presided over a port of exceptional importance along the commercial routes between the Italian peninsula and Sicily.
The walls are made of basaltic materials, typical of the place. After the Spanish fortifications and the Greek tower (4th century BC) on which the medieval tower-gate (12th-13th centuries) is set, you reach the heart of the citadel.
On the right the Church of Saint Catherine, followed by an area of archaeological excavations showing overlapping remains of dwellings (huts), buildings and streets of various eras, from the Bronze Age (culture of Capo Graziano) to the Hellenistic and Roman ages; behind there are the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the eighteenth-century Church of the Immaculate.
On the left side, in the center, stands the cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of the Aeolian, St. Bartholomew: of medieval construction, it was rebuilt in the Spanish era, while the façade dates back to the 19th century. The annexed cloisture dates back to the Norman era. Opposite there is a staircase that dates back to the beginning of this century and for build it it was necessary to “cut” the walls. It is possible to vist the Castle of Lipari and the Aeolian Archaeological Museum:
